Child care guidance

Everything for your little one

AI-powered guidance on feeding, sleep, and development — plus trusted nannies and babysitters when you need a helping hand.

Feeding

  • Newborns feed every 1.5–3 hours (8–12 times per day)
  • Breastfed babies may feed more frequently than formula-fed
  • Signs of hunger: rooting, sucking hands, fussiness
  • Signs of fullness: turning head away, slowing sucking, relaxed hands

Consult a midwife or health visitor if worried about feeding

Sleep

  • Newborns sleep 14–17 hours per day in short stretches
  • Always put baby on their back to sleep (Safe Sleep)
  • Use a firm, flat mattress with no pillows or loose bedding
  • Room temperature: 16–20°C (60–68°F)

Safe Sleep: back to sleep, clear cot, smoke-free home

Basic care

  • Umbilical cord stump falls off in 1–3 weeks — keep it clean and dry
  • Bathe 2–3 times per week using lukewarm water
  • Normal: sneezing, hiccups, irregular breathing patterns
  • Baby will regain birth weight by 2 weeks

When to seek medical help

  • High fever (38°C+ in babies under 3 months — call 999)
  • Difficulty breathing or persistent coughing
  • Refusing all feeds for more than 8 hours
  • Unusual drowsiness or difficulty waking
  • Rash that doesn't fade when pressed (glass test)
  • Fontanelle (soft spot) bulging or sunken
  • You feel something isn't right — trust your instincts

This guidance is for information only. Always consult your GP or health visitor for medical concerns.
